Shams Al-Din Al-Hanafi
Shams Al-Din Al-Hanafi (1): Abu Abdullah Muhammad Bin Hasan Bin Ali Al-Hanafi was from the tribe of Taym, a sub-clan of the tribe of Quraysh, and a descendent of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq known as “Qutb Al-‘Arifeen” Shams Al-Din of Egypt. Shams Al-Din was the fifth khalifah (head) of the Sufi Shadhali Order. A man of great prestige, he was born in 767 AH and lived in Cairo. As a child, he lost both of his parents and grew up an orphan. He was adopted by his maternal uncle, who tried to teach him a trade, but he used to run away to school in order to memorize the Qur’an and learn from the scholars. He secluded himself for the purpose of worship when he was fourteen years old.
Shams Al-Din authored Al-Amthal fi Al-Tasawwuf, in which a story about a mulberry tree says: It told me, “They planted me, and once they watered me, my roots were established. Once I was established, I branched out, and once I branched out, I grew leaves, and once I grew leaves, I bore fruit, and once I bore fruit, I fed (others).” Regarding this, he said: “Its words set an example for me.”
A devout man of great piety, Shams Al-Din Al-Hanafi was a jurist and scholar who preached and taught others. His entire life was spent in worship as he sought knowledge, fed people, and helped the poor and anyone who came to him. He became famous for some stories that were told about him in relation to Sultan Faraj Bin Barquq and others. In addition to his poetry, his authored works included Al-Rawdh Al-Nashiq fi ‘Ilm Al-Tariq and Sharh Al-Mukhtar lil Museli fi Al-Furu’. A saying of his was: “Beware of denying the miracles of the saints, for they have been established in the Qur’an and the Sunnah.”
Shams Al-Din Al-Hanafi died in his zawiya in Cairo in Rabi’ Al-Awwal of 847 AH (1443 AD). In a work of poetry, someone said regarding him:
O Descendant of Al-Siddiq, (he who believed) the Prophet—
Those affiliated with you will live a blessed life and not be treated with injustice.
