Qurayba Bint Abi Quhafa (The Girl with the Necklace)
Qurayba Bint Abi Quhafa (1): The youngest daughter of the Sahabi (Companion) Abu Quhafa and the youngest sister of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him. Her mother was Hind Bint Nufayl (or “Nuqayd,” according to some sources) Bin Bujair Bin Abd Bin Qusai, whose mother was Umm Farwa Bint Abi Jundub Bin Rawaha of the tribe of Huthail. Qurayba was married to the Sahabi Qais Bin Sa’d Bin Ubadah of the Ansar, but she did not have any children with him.
Urwah Ibn Al-Zubayr narrated an incident that took place between Qurayba and her husband, Qais Bin Sa’d, saying: “Qais Bin Sa’d had sold some goods from Muawiya for a sum of ninety thousand, so he had an announcer call out in Madinah: ‘He who desires a loan should come to the home of Qais!’ He loaned out forty or fifty (thousand), gave the rest away, and wrote out a promissory note for each person he’d lent money to. When he fell ill, however, he had few visitors, so asked his wife, Qurayba Bint Abi Quhafa, the sister of Abu Bakr: ‘O Qurayba, why do you think my visitors are so few?’ She said: ‘Because of the debts they have,’ whereupon (he absolved everyone he had loaned money to of their debts).”
Qurayba Bint Abi Quhafa was the person who accompanied her father, Abu Quhafa, on the day of the Conquest of Makkah. She was also “the girl with the necklace” on that day.
It was reported that Asma’ Bint Abi Bakr said: “When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, stood at Dhi Tuwa, Abu Quhafa told one of his youngest daughters: ‘O daughter, guide me to Mount Abu Qubais.’ She added: ‘And he was blind.’ She said: ‘When I got him there, he said: ‘O daughter, what do you see?’ She said: ‘I see a man running back and forth through a mass of blackness.’ He said: ‘That is the army adjutant, O daughter. Look! What do you see?’ She said: ‘The blackness has spread.’ He said: ‘The armies have been released! Home! Home!’ She said that she guided him down, frightened of what she had seen, so he told her: ‘O daughter, don’t be afraid. By Allah, your brother Ateeq is the most beloved of Muhammad’s companions to Muhammad.’ He said: ‘She had a silver necklace which was stolen by someone who entered.’ They said: ‘Then when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him and his family, came, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: ‘I adjure you by Allah, my sister’s necklace!’ He said that three times. Then he said: ‘O Sister, be content (with what happened to) your necklace as there is not much honesty amongst people.’”
Al-Waqidi mentioned the girl’s name in his Kitab Al-Maghazi, saying that she was Qurayba Bint Abi Quhafa.
